REQUIRED READING
-
Training Manual - Level One (.pdf)
- Amy Sherman,
Restorers of Hope (Charlottesville, VA.; Hudson Faith in
Communities, 1997). Gives compelling evidence that local congregations
can become “Restorers of Hope” in their communities. Shows how to move
beyond “commodity-based ministry” to “relational-based
ministry.”
- Amy Sherman, ABC’s
of Community Ministry (Charlottesville, VA.; Hudson Faith in
Communities, 2001). A workbook that is sufficiently thorough yet
strikingly simple…perfect for laying a foundation for holistic ministry
with busy lay people.
- Tim Keller,
Ministries of Mercy, The Call of the Jericho Road, 2nd edition,
(Phillipsburg, NJ.: P&R Publishing, 1997). Packed full of simple but
compelling theology and great advice on how to launch compassion
ministry teams in a local church. Keller pastors an urban church that is
making a big impact in New York.
- Salt and Light
Guidebook (Knoxville, TN.; Compassion Coalition, 2002): A must read
guide to becoming salt and light in Knoxville, TN. Over 200 pages of
Knoxville research, stories of hope, and glimpses in the lives of local
people.
- VARIOUS HANDOUTS -
e.g. “Helpful Tips: Practical Do’s and Don’ts of Serving”
SUPPLEMENTAL READING (for
the enthusiast!)
- Ron Sider, Phil Olsen,
Heidi Unruh, Churches that Make a Difference (Grand Rapids, MI.:
Baker Books, 2002). Provides a compelling description of “holistic”
(i.e., word and deed) churches and gives a wealth of practical advice on
how to build them.
- Robert Lewis, The
Church of Irresistible Influence (Grand Rapids, MI.: Zondervan,
2001). Tells the thrilling but very practical story of how Fellowship
Bible Church restructured itself to become “irresistible” to the
community. A great book to give pastors.
WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID
ABOUT THIS COURSE
Lynna Nicholas, Compassion
Director, Kern United Methodist Church
It is better than I could have
hoped or imagined. I am so excited to be receiving the resources to take
back to Kern. Instead of feeling like a failure in my role in outreach at
our church, I am increasingly excited, impassioned, and hopeful.
Marty Kansky – Compassion
Director, West Park Baptist Church
The leadership training presented
by the Coalition provided the information needed to effectively plan,
form, and implement a compassion ministry in our church.
