Ways to Connect with Internationals

Open Up Your Life & Be A Friend
• Invite an international student or family to your house for dinner. Have them bring a favorite dish and make it a cultural experience. Build on this foundation and watch God grow a real friendship.
• Serve as a host family for an international student at UT: contact Paul Slay, Navigators, 584-7390.
• Befriend international students at (1) the English Language Institute (University of Tennessee), Jim Hamrick, 974-3404; (2) International House at UT: Dave Lawson, Assistant Director, 974-4453; or (3) Pellissippi State: Brian Todd, 539-7007.
• Give cultural insights. Be an advisor for many confusing aspects of American life including insurance policies, finding employment, paying taxes and getting health care. Try to understand their culture. Listen to their music and share your favorite music as well.
• Help obtain a driver’s license.
• Go with them to find better housing.
• Provide transportation to medical appointments or to church services.
• Go along to the grocery store and introduce foods. Even the most basic nutrition knowledge can be helpful.
• Find a way to answer the legal questions internationals have.
• Spend time with their children, helping them to succeed at school.
• Take students on trips; share your family.
