Ways to Connect with Economics |
How Businesses Can Make a Difference
• Help fund Project GRAD a dynamic educational program that will help many
inner-city youth graduate from college. Contact Jerry Hodges, 524-4030.
• Support and encourage business relationships with minority-owned
companies.
• Pay all employees at least a living wage and consider health benefits.
• Invest in an at-risk community by hiring and providing transportation to
your workplace.
• Allow employees to volunteer once a week at a local school to mentor an
eager student.
• Partner with and financially help a local school in your area.
• Hire a refugee. Call Mary Lieberman at Bridge Refugee Resettlement and
Sponsorship Services, 540-1311.
• Hire a former offender, see the Former Offender chapter for a list of
contacts (e.g., Steve Humphreys with Focus Ministries, 694-3837). Do this
for any of the chapters.
• Talk with David Ragland at the Knoxville Christian Community Foundation
(523-5610) about how your money can be invested for kingdom purposes in
Knoxville. He’ll help you save taxes too!
• Brainstorm with Dan Kuban, a local businessman (692-0095).
Volunteer Organizations
Several Knoxville groups have a vision to empower people in their
financial stewardship, job skills and other area that can make an economic
impact on families:
Habitat for Humanity: Judy Barnett, 523-3539
Be a “budget tutor” for one hour per week for the financial literacy
classes that empower people who partner with Habitat.
Provide Jobs for Inner city Youth
• SEED - Solutions to Education & Empowerment Development (CAC): Pat

• Eight Ball Program, TRIBE ONE: Chris Woodhull, 546-4131.
Job Partnership Program: Kathy Upton, call 971-1988. Serve as a mentor and
help with job skills training. Special need for mature male Christians who
possess a good knowledge of scriptures. Provide jobs for program
graduates.
Child and Family’s Partners Program: 544-0053. Assist single parents to
develop micro-enterprise ideas so they can work at home and be with their
children.
Child and Family’s Family Loan Program: 691-3332. Need financial
counselors to teach basic financial-planning principles.
Career Center in Knoxville: 522-8322. Give seminars or workshops for those
seeking employment.
Congregations can host Crown Financial Ministry seminars and invite other
churches to participate. Teach and equip basic biblical stewardship
principles.
Other Volunteer Opportunities
• Be a job coach to under skilled persons and give them on-the-job
training necessary to earn a self-sustaining salary.
• Donate your expertise of carpentry, computer skills or car repair and
train someone in a new field of work.
• Donate alarm clocks to shelters for homeless as they get homes and jobs.
