Way to Connect with African Americans |
Schools
To find out how you can support Project GRAD (and other inner-city)
schools as mentioned in Mr. Thompson’s letter, see the EDUCATION chapter
of this document.
Relationships
Pastors/ministry leaders: If you desire to build a cross-cultural
relationship with another pastor or ministry leader, call LeRoy Thompson
(524-5494). He can help you get started. There are many others who can
help as well. Some of these include Pastor James Davis (637-1707), Senior
Pastor at Eternal Life Harvest Center, Pastor Jarvis Ross (673-0733),
Senior Pastor at Community Evangelistic Church, Pastor Johnie Skinner
(522-2715), Senior Pastor at Mount Zion Baptist Church, and Chris Martin
(524-2774), President of the Knoxville Leadership Foundation.
Business
Businessmen and women, will you pray about this article? Ask God what
specifically you could do to make Knoxville more of a place of dignity and
honor for all colors. There is much work to do but many have already
started.
To Promote Understanding
If you want to learn more about African American culture in Knoxville,
visit the Beck Cultural Exchange Center (524-8461, 1927 Dandridge Avenue).
This is a fascinating museum of African American history in our community.
If you want to learn more about undoing racism in your business, church or
organization, call Saadia Williams (522-7111) with Project Change. She is
experienced, passionate and objective.
Together, we can live as family in a city saturated in the love of Jesus
Christ.
If you feel inadequate for relational
ministry, then the truth is you’ve got one of the most important
qualifications! For, indeed, you are not adequate for the task. But
God’s Word promises that we can do all things through God who
strengthens us. God makes us competent. We just need to be available
and willing...You see, Jesus already knows you are weak. He already
knows you have little strength. But He has chosen to get His work
done on earth through jars of clay who have little strength--that’s
us! And as we minister out of our weakness, Jesus comes through with
His strength, and that’s what makes the difference.
