To my Lord Jesus – for birthing this in Your heart and
giving us the strength to do it.
To my precious wife of 13 years, Paige, you make me the envy of a city
of men! And to my four boys (Caleb, 7 years; Noah, 4 years; Micah, 2
years; and Jonah, 1 year) – I love you very much. You spent many
evenings and weekends without Daddy. Get ready to wrestle and enjoy
family life again!
To my pastor and dear friend, James Davis, and to my
inner-city church, Eternal Life Harvest Center – for providing the gift
of real friendship, vision for community transformation and passionate
music that provides the
context for healing and hope that I live in.
To my partner, Doug Harris - for being a soul mate and giving many
afternoons and evenings to this work.
To my assistants, Miriam Seylar and Kim Vincill – for working tirelessly
for weeks on end.
To those who prayed so diligently every week, Roberta Potter, David
Moore, and Ken Callaham – your prayers lifted us all up. I cannot tell
you how thankful I am.
To Compassion Coalition board members for everything each of you did to
aid the research and writing process (especially Veta Sprinkle, Carol
Hollar and Ann Ince).
To the various professionals who gave of their time: Gretchen Beal,
Sarah Powell and Terry Gihula at the Metropolitan Planning Commission;
Deputy Police Chief Jerry Day, Lieutenant Bobby Hubbs and Officer
Savannah Ayub at the Knoxville Police Department; Rhonda Garren in the
District Attorney’s office; Barbara Kelly, Executive Director of the
Community Action Committee; and many others not named.
To Lawrence Woodhull and Jim Phillips – for giving vision and direction
to the layout.
To Fellowship Evangelical Free Church – for providing the space for most
of the research focus groups
